HEAVY WEAPONS
Designation: MGL-Mk1
Weapon type: Semi-automatic, revolver-type grenade launcher
Ammunition: 40x46mm HE (High Explosive) & HEF (High Explosive Fragmentation)
Overview: The "Multiple Grenade Launcher" is a shoulder-fired infantry support weapon, firing 40x46mm canister rounds with revolver action from a detachable 6-round magazine. After firing, a gas-operated plunger advances the next round into the chamber. It has a maximum range of approximately 400 meters.1
Notes: Although specifics were never given, a weapon of similar design and appearance was utilized by Richard Chaves’ character in the 1987 film Predator, as well as in the first-person shooter PC games Aliens vs. Predator 1 and 2. In the latter it is credited as the M92.2 This is an actual weapon manufactured by Milkor of South Africa, and is currently in use by various police and military forces around the globe.1
Designation: M83A2 SADAR (Shoulder-launched, Active-homing Disposable Anti-tank Rocket)
Weapon type: Guided/unguided anti-armor rocket system
Ammunition: Armor-piercing rocket
Overview: The SADAR is a disposable, lightweight weapon that is effective not only against armored vehicles, but also against bunkers and various other hardened targets. Upon activating the weapon, the operator has the ability to acquire and track targets using a thermal imaging unit linked to an infra-red seeker mounted in the projectile’s nose. The weapon may also be fired directly, without any guidance from the electronics. It has a maximum range of 1,000 meters, but can only be fired once before the launching tube is discarded.3
Notes: This is a fictional weapon that has been featured in Lee Brimmicombe-Wood’s Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual and the first-person shooter PC game Aliens vs. Predator, though in the latter the SADAR was not disposable. A weapon of similar design was featured in its sequel, Aliens vs. Predator 2, but was credited as the M6B and possessed semi-automatic action.2
Designation: M78 P.I.G. (Phased Plasma Infantry Gun)
Weapon type: Phased plasma infantry weapon
Ammunition: Charged Cadmium Telluride pellets
Overview: The "Phased Plasma Infantry Weapon," or P.I.G., is a man-portable, shoulder-fired phased plasma system suitable for destroying large, armored targets. Power is provided by a hydrogen fuel cell, which supplies four megaWatts to the weapon's magnetic coil. The weapon may discharge thirty times before requiring a recharge, and is capable of penetrating armor at a range of approximately 1,000 meters. Though powerul, the M78's weight is on the heavy side, weighing just over 15 kilograms.3
Notes: The M78 is a fictional weapon that was featured in Lee Brimmicombe-Wood’s Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual.
Designation: BFG 9000
Weapon type: Experimental plasma discharge weapon
Ammunition: Unknown
Overview: The "Bio-Force Gun" is an experimental weapon under development by the Union Aerospace Corporation. Design and operational characteristics of the BFG are classified, known only to the technicians responsible for handling and testing the weapon. Observations indicate the weapon is capable of firing a mass of plasma11 capable of destroying hardened targets and steel/concrete-reinforced doors. However, this firepower is not without drawback: the BFG can only be fired twice before a new magazine must be inserted.**
Notes: The BFG 9000 is a fictional weapon that has been featured in the Doom series of first-person shooter computer games developed by Id Software. It was also featured in the 2005 film Doom, where it was utilized by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character "Sarge."12
**Specifics on the design and operation of this weapon are not known, and are limited to observations. This weapon was added to RP under the assumption that it would operate using some manner of battery pack, as it doesn't appear to use any form of conventional ammunition.
ASSAULT WEAPONS
Designation: M41A
Weapon type: General-purpose automatic assault rifle
Ammunition: M309 10x24mm explosive-tipped caseless; M38 30mm HEAP (High-Explosive Armor-Piercing); M108 30mm Buckshot Canister
Overview: This pulse-action assault rifle is the standard infantry weapon of the Colonial Marines. It has a cyclic rate of 900 rounds per minute, and is selective between semi-automatic, four-round burst and fully automatic fire. The general-purpose M309 ammunition is fed through a 99-round magazine containing a U-bend conveyer. Under the barrel is a 30mm pump-action grenade launcher, capable of firing the M38 HEAP grenade or the M108 shotgun round. The launcher must be hand-fed, and is fired using a trigger mounted under the magazine receiver. The M41A has an effective range of approximately 500 meters.3
Notes: The M41A is a fictional weapon that was featured in the 1986 film Aliens and its sequel, 1992’s Alien3. It also made appearances in Lee Brimmicombe-Wood’s Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual and the first-person shooter PC games Aliens vs. Predator 1 and 2.
Designation: M56A2
Weapon type: General-purpose squad automatic weapon
Ammunition: M25010x28mm explosive-tipped caseless
Overview: The pulse-action M56 “Smartgun” is the primary squad machine gun of the Colonial Marines. This large weapon is carried with an upper-body mounting harness worn by the operator, which is connected to the gun itself via a computer-controlled, gyrostabilized articulation arm. To aim and fire the weapon, the operator looks through a sighting system that is worn over one eye. This sighting system is connected to infra-red sensors mounted above the barrel, giving the operator a video display of the combat environment. When a target is acquired, the weapon is automatically steered to obtain a lock at center-mass. The gun can then be fired using electronic triggers on the foregrip or the rear hand-hold. Ammunition is stored in a 150-round continuous-link drum mounted on the left-hand side.** The M250 round fired by the M56 is considerably more powerful than that of the M41A, and the automatic sighting system can compensate for firing from a standing, crouching or prone position. It has an effective range of 1,500 meters, and fires in bursts or fully automatic at a rate of up to 1,200 rounds per minute.3 However, the complexity of the weapon’s electronics brings about issues in reliability, and its much-larger size can make it unwieldy in close-quarters combat.
Notes: This fictional weapon was utilized by the characters of Jenette Goldstein (Vasquez) and Mark Rolston (Drake) in the 1986 film Aliens. It was also featured in Lee Brimmicombe-Wood’s Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual, as well as the first-person shooter PC games Aliens vs. Predator 1 and 2.
**No information was given in regards to the capacity of the ammunition drum, so I have set this number to 150 rounds per drum for the purposes of RP.
Designation: 590A1
Weapon type: Pump-action, special purpose shotgun
Ammunition: 12-gauge, 2-3/4” or 3” buckshot or slug cartridges
Overview: This pump-action, 12-guage shotgun features a heavy-duty barrel, heat shield and 8+1-round capacity. Capable of firing a standard 2-3/4” cartridge or the larger 3” cartridge, the 590-series can be customized with a wide range of accessories, from pistol-grip kits to laser-sighting systems.4 Extremely effective in the breaching of doors and close-quarters combat, the weapon’s stopping power is limited at ranges exceeding 30 meters. Slug cartridges possess a greater range and accuracy, whereas buckshot cartridges spread out after firing, covering a wider area at closer range.
Notes: A shotgun resembling the Mossberg 590-series was featured in the first-person shooter PC game Aliens vs. Predator 2.2 This is an actual weapon produced by O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc., and is currently in use with military and civilian forces in many countries.
Designation: M240
Weapon type: Incinerator/flame unit
Fuel: thickened napthal
Overview: The incinerator unit is a carbine-type weapon that emits a stream of continuous-burning flame at an effective range of approximately 30 meters. A thickened napthal fuel stored in refillable containers is pressurized and expelled from the nozzle, then ignited by a small burner.3 It is very effective against soft targets.
Notes: The M240 is a fictional weapon that was featured in the 1986 film Aliens. It also made appearances in Lee Brimmicombe-Wood’s Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual and the first-person shooter PC games Aliens vs. Predator 1 and 2.
Designation: M42A
Weapon type: Semi-automatic long-range sniper rifle
Ammunition: M252 10x28mm caseless HEAP (High-Explosive Armor-Piercing)
Overview: The M42 is the primary sniper rifle of the Colonial Marines. It is designed in a “bullpup” configuration, allowing for a small size while maintaining excellent long-range accuracy. A 20x sensor scope is utilized to aid aiming, and can display infra-red and electromagnetic signatures in addition to visual images. Its M252 ammunition has an effective range of 2,900 meters, and is fired from a 15-round magazine inserted behind the pistol grip.3 This pulse-action rifle is the perfect weapon for long-range targets, but ill-suited to close engagements.
Notes: This fictional weapon appears in Lee Brimmicombe-Wood’s Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual, although it bears a remarkable resemblance to the Walther WA2000, an actual sniper rifle produced until 1988. Like the M42A, the WA 2000 is also a semi-automatic, bullpup-design weapon, though it fires the .300 and .308 Winchester rounds.5
Designation: M214
Weapon type: Heavy-duty squad automatic weapon/minigun
Ammunition: 5.56 x 45mm HEAP (High-Explosive Armor-Piercing)**
Overview: The M214 is the heaviest automatic assault weapon in the Colonial Marines’ arsenal. With six barrels and selectable rates of fire from 400 to 4,000 rounds per minute, the weapon easily destroys soft and lightly-armored targets. The HEAP ammunition is designed to penetrate its target before detonating, and is stored in a 1,000-round backpack worn by the operator. The M214 requires skill and strength to use properly, as its weight, bulk and exceptional recoil make it difficult to maneuver. Though it boasts the highest cyclic rate of all USCM infantry weapons, its rate of fire is reduced to approximately 1,200 rounds per minute when carried.6 A tripod mounting system restores its full capability, but limits the operator to a fixed position when in use.
Notes: This actual weapon was built by General Electric to be a scaled, man-portable version of the M134 “minigun”, a multi-barreled helicopter-mounted weapon. Because of the weight, recoil and torque issues involved, an operator could not practically utilize such a weapon in the battlefield environment without the use of a tripod or other mounting system.10 The XM214 (“X” signifies prototype status) was designed to change this, but never reached production status. The “X” has been removed from the designation under the assumption that this weapon has been refined enough to enter service with the Colonial Marines under its original pretense: a heavy-duty squad automatic weapon with a high rate of fire.
**The actual ammunition used by the XM214 was 5.56x45mm NATO, but this has been altered for the purposes of RP.
SIDEARMS
Designation: P90C6
Weapon type: Close-range Personal defense weapon/sub-machine gun
Ammunition: 5.7x28mm AP (Armor-Piercing)
Overview: This is a specialized variant of the bullpup-design P90 PDW, used primarily by the security personnel on LV-143. The P90C6 fires an armor-piercing pistol round from a 60-round magazine, and features an extended foregrip. A compact size and high rate of fire make it a formidable weapon in close-quarters situations, though it is not practical for engaging targets at any considerable distance.
Notes: While the P90 is a real-world weapon manufactured by Fabrique Nationale, the "C6" in the designation marks this as a fictional variant of the author's design. The actual P90 fires from a 50-round magazine, and has no extended foregrip.13
Designation: Desert Eagle Mk. 19
Weapon type: Semi-automatic, gas-operated pistol
Ammunition: .50 Action Express
Overview: Using technology more commonly found in rifles, this large pistol is capable of firing several calibers of ammunition with the change of a few components. Though formidable in capability, the Desert Eagle is also daunting in bulk, weight and sound. It also has a low ammunition capacity, firing only seven rounds from its magazine before reloading.7
Notes: The Desert Eagle is an actual weapon currently marketed by Magnum Research, Inc., though development was split between Magnum Research and Israeli Military Industries. It was manufactured in three versions and several calibers, including .357, .41 and .44 Magnum. The only model currently produced is the Mk. 19, which is available in .357 and .44 Magnum as well as .50 Action Express.7
Designation: M4A3
Weapon type: Semi-automatic pistol
Ammunition: 9mm ball rimless
Overview: The M4A3 pistol is the standard sidearm of the Colonial Marines. The entire weapon is fabricated out of lightweight alloys, and fires from a 12-round magazine.3

Designation: VP70
Weapon type: Semi-automatic pistol
Ammunition: 9x19mm Parabellum
Overview: Another Colonial Marine sidearm, this polymer-frame weapon fires the popular 9mm Parabellum round from an 18-round magazine.8
Notes: This is an actual weapon, manufactured by Heckler & Koch GmbH of Germany. It was featured in Lee Brimmicombe-Wood’s Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual, and utilized by the characters of William Hope (Gorman) and Ricco Ross (Frost) in the 1986 film Aliens.
Designation: Raging Bull Model 444
Weapon type: Revolver-action pistol
Ammunition: .44 Magnum
Overview: This Raging Bull-series revolver is manufactured with a 6-1/2" or 8-3/8" barrel, and fires six of the powerful .44 Magnum rounds.9
Notes: This is an actual weapon produced by Taurus Arms International of Brazil.
